Project Theta (RPG devlog) Chapter Fourteen: Scope Creep


Hello Everybody!

* I wasn't feeling the organization of the other devlogs so I'm going to try just writing in paragraph mode for now...Yay!

Scope Creep. Defined as changes, continuous or uncontrolled growth in a project’s scope, at any point after the project begins. Yes...scope creep. Now why would I be talking about scope creep right now? Well that's because I have had to deal with some of it recently. The biggest issue is playing other games and being like...oh that looks cool, maybe I could change it to this and...just...no. Most of the ideas aren't great for this game, so they've been easy to say no to. Others have been included in the scope such as stuff like saving and loading. And others have been really hard to throw away, such as new character ideas, enemy types, and other ideas that I don't have time or resources for. All I can say for others with scope creep is this, unless your idea really benefits the game, and I mean really, don't do it. Save it for an update or another game because, while timelines aren't the be all end all, they are important. That's me taking something seriously for once...wow that felt weird.


So here's the general update. I've started animating  the characters with the new art style. So far they are looking really good (in my opinion but I'm biased) and I hope to have them done in a week or so. I'm also getting ready to make a new enemy but I've got to finish the current ones first. Overall, art has been accomplished and art is all that's been accomplished. I've made some of the environments such as gravestones, signposts, grass, and some UI like text boxes. Sorry there's no grandiose monstrosity to display, but I think the art is somewhat interesting. The plan moving forward is to get all the art and music done in about 3 weeks. There will likely be some time for coding in there but not much. I might code some of the UI and other highly repetitive code just to make sure it's done. The goal is still to have a beta August 31 and a final release September 9th. Hopefully I can meet that deadline and avoid scope creep.
